How to write clear instructions.

Make sure you're writing clearly.

Storyline's flexibility allows you to create research or clinical programs of any kind, and for any use case. You'll want to make sure that you're not confusing your recipients and that the program, questions and messages are clear and understandable.

This article doesn't cover all of the ways you can use Storyline.

There are multiple parts to every program; the Openstory page, the program copy, the acceptance instructions, and the questions.

Best practice: Test the program multiple times to see exactly how recipients will experience your program.

Headlines

Keep headlines short but clear. If you're sending something with a time component you'll want to include it. Good headlines are just long enough to get the main point across and no longer. It's okay to use jargon and abbreviations that your recipients will understand as long as it's clear.

Read your headline and try to imagine any possible way that it might be misunderstood. For example, use a day of the week like "Thursday" instead of "day after tomorrow"... and keep it friendly.  : )

Good headlines:

  • Dr. Kelper is waiting for your response
  • Please respond tomorrow before Noon
  • Let us know how you're doing today

Poor headlines:

  • Your session is due
  • Response requested

The Program Copy

Here's where you write the offer and add more detail.

Your copy can be any length but simple, clear copy will get read more and generate more responses.

Try to use the limits and controls that Storyline provides rather than writing everything out in the copy. For example, if you're limiting participants to 5,000 or setting an expiration date to join your program, there's no need to include that in the copy since Storyline will automate that.

Sending instructions

Only people who have accepted your program will see this. Just keep it short and sweet and tell them exactly what the next step should be. Again, short and clear.

Examples:

Call us immediately to schedule the next available appointment
There is no need for you to take any action. We will follow up again in 5 days.
